Tips for Sewing Sea Stuffed Animals
- Use pins or clips to keep your fabric in place, especially on curves.
- Take your time when turning tiny parts right side out — using a blunt pencil helps push out small fins and tails without tearing the fabric.
- For tight spots, a chopstick is your best tool to push stuffing into every corner.

I so love this! I did craft work when I was in middle school ages ago and I haven’t seen anything remotely close to this since then. My teacher Ms. Mooreland taught this. I really miss her. But she was the reason why I was really excited about sewing as a kid.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Shakida!
You’re absolutely right — sometimes in life we meet amazing people who light a spark in us and inspire us to try something new or look at things differently. Your Ms. Mooreland sounds like she was exactly that kind of teacher — what a gift to have had her in your life!
It’s really touching to hear how she got you excited about sewing all those years ago. Even if a lot of time has passed, that spark is still there — you’re here now, remembering her and thinking about picking up your crafting again. That’s really special.
If you ever feel like dusting off your old skills, you’re always welcome here — and I bet Ms. Mooreland would be so proud to see you creating again.
Happy sewing!
Where do I begin? If I may ask, what got you interested into sewing stuff animals?
My teacher (RIP) Ms. Mooreland used to teach us this many years ago now, in middle school in our home mech class. Although I was a very shy kid, I really took a liking to sewing different things. My favorite thing to do was embroidery. I never got the hang of sewing stuff animals. I although I was truly intrigued.
My mom and her mother also sewed. When my own personal stuffy teddy bears got holes in them from over usage (me playing with them), my mom would sew them right back up like new! Even their little eyes. I believe this is a skill that needs to be reintroduced at all grade schools, middle schools as well as high schools.
This would really get the kids’ creative minds going and wanting to learn. If I am not mistaken there are whole communities on Facebook and Instagram that does this. My co-worker knits scarves, shirts, socks and whatever comes to her mind. I really like this particular niche. I will have to go dig back up my skills (20+ years ago). Great job on this niche! You can really make some money here, especially marketing to family and kids.
Thank you for sharing your story! It’s wonderful that you have such warm memories of your mom and grandma sewing and repairing your stuffed animals — that’s truly a priceless skill.
You’re absolutely right that basic crafting skills, if practiced regularly and with love, can grow into something much bigger than just simple crafts. For example, I personally work with collectible toys and create unique bears that are valued not just as toys but as true works of art.
