Crafting a teddy bear is a timeless and heartwarming project, and with our free felt teddy bear template, you can create your very own adorable companion in no time. This beginner-friendly tutorial will walk you through creating a meaningful handmade gift or a fun craft to enjoy.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

Before diving in, gather these materials:

  • Felt fabric: Choose soft and thin durable felt in your favorite colors (brown, beige, or pastel shades work wonderfully).
  • Sewing supplies: Needle, thread (matching colors), scissors, and pins.
  • Eyes: Small glass eyes (approximately 5 mm in diameter), beads, or fabric paint for an alternative.
  • Adhesive: Fabric glue for attaching smaller pieces like the nose or optional decorations. You can also use a strong glue UHU as an alternative.
  • Stuffing: Polyfill or any lightweight stuffing material.
  • Accessories (optional): Ribbons, buttons, or tiny felt shapes like hearts for embellishments.

Downloading and Preparing Your Free Felt Teddy Bear Template

Start by downloading the free template from our website. Please print it out in its original size to ensure the proportions are correct. Carefully cut out the pattern pieces and use them to trace the shapes onto your felt fabric. When tracing, using a fabric marker or chalk for clear lines is helpful. Precision here makes assembling your teddy bear much smoother!

If you don’t have a fabric marker or chalk, you can use a regular pen, but be very careful to make sure the lines aren’t too dark or visible on the fabric after cutting out the pieces. It’s best to use a pen with a fine tip and a light trace, so the marks can be easily hidden if needed.

To download the pattern, follow the instructions below:

From a phone or a tablet (Android): There should be something similar for mobile devices with Android or iOS. Click on the image. Save it by holding your finger on the image and selecting the “Save Image” option. Then go to your photo gallery and print it (there is an option).

From a computer (Windows): Click on the photo of the pattern you see below. In the new tab that will open, you press the right mouse button and select the “Save image as …” option. Then, you choose where the image will be saved on your computer.

How to Make Your Felt Teddy Bear Step by Step

Cutting the Felt Pieces

Using your prepared template, cut out the necessary felt parts. You will need two identical pieces for the body, four for the arms, and additional smaller pieces for the face (ears, muzzle, and belly). Remember to leave a 5 mm seam allowance around each piece to ensure proper stitching. Keep your scissors sharp for clean edges—this small detail makes a big difference in the final look.

Assembling the Teddy Bear

  1. Stitch the Body: Place the two body pieces together and sew around the edges using a backstitch. Leave a small gap to add the stuffing.
  2. Stitch the Arms: Place the two mirror arm pieces together and sew around the edges using a backstitch. Leave a small gap to add the stuffing. Make the same with the other two mirror parts.
  3. Stuff and Seal: Fill your bear with polyfill, ensuring it’s evenly distributed for a smooth shape. Once stuffed, close the gap with the ladder stitch.
Tip: Before turning your teddy bear right side out, make small snips along the curves. This will prevent the fabric from puckering after you flip it. Be careful not to cut into the seam.
  4. Create the Face: Attach the muzzle, belly patch, and ears. You can sew these parts for a sturdy finish or use fabric glue for quicker assembly. Insert the eyes and hide the edges of a thread where you will attach the arms.
  5. Attach the Arms: Sew or glue the arms to the sides of the body. You can position them in a way that makes your teddy look like it’s ready for a hug!
  6. Add the Features: Embroider a small smile and use black felt or beads for the nose.

Adding the Final Touches

Now it’s time to give your teddy bear some personality! Add blush and eyebrows to your teddy bear using chalk or pastels.

Add a tiny bow around its neck, or attach a felt heart to its hands for an extra touch of charm. Accessories are entirely up to you, so feel free to get creative.

    • Thank you for your inspiring comment! 😊 It’s so wonderful to know that you liked the project and feel motivated to give it a try.

Decorating the teddy bear opens up so many possibilities to make it unique and special! You can add a tiny scarf or ribbon bow in bright colors, which always looks adorable, or embroider small hearts, stars, or initials on the felt to give the toy a personal touch. The eyes can be made from small buttons, beads, or black felt, and if you have a bit of lace or miniature accessories like a hat or purse, they can beautifully complete the look. Additionally, you could attach a small felt flower or a paper bouquet to the bear’s paw.

It’s especially fun to dress the teddy bear as a favorite character! Imagine how charming it would look in Harry Potter’s glasses and scarf, with a superhero’s cape like Superman’s, or with a crown and a cape to turn it into royalty. Themed looks also provide lots of room for creativity: a traveler bear with a tiny backpack, a chef bear with a mini apron, or an artist bear with a brush and a felt palette.

Seasonal outfits are another wonderful idea. For example, a Christmas teddy bear with a Santa hat, an autumn bear with a scarf and a leaf, or a summer bear with sunglasses and a small hat. If you’re looking for something more unique, why not try a profession-themed bear? A doctor bear with a tiny stethoscope, a pilot bear with a hat, or a builder bear with a small felt helmet will definitely catch everyone’s attention.

I’m sure any of these options will make your teddy bear special and bring joy to you and those around you. If you try any of these ideas, please share the results — I’d be thrilled to see your creation! 💕

  2. The idea of a free felt teddy bear template is such a creative and welcoming way to encourage beginners to dive into DIY crafts. It’s so satisfying to make something with your own hands, especially when it’s as timeless as a teddy bear. One thing I’d be curious to know is how customizable the template is for people who might want to add unique touches, like embroidery or different fabrics. Also, do you have recommendations for beginners on the best type of felt to use – synthetic versus wool-blend – since that can impact the final look and feel? It’s inspiring to see projects like this that are both simple and meaningful. Have you heard any feedback from readers who’ve tried it with kids? It seems like it could be a great bonding activity!

    • Thank you for your comment! 😊 You’re absolutely right—creating something with your own hands is such an enjoyable and rewarding process, especially when it’s a classic and adorable project like a teddy bear.

For this specific template, I recommend using thin synthetic felt. It’s perfect for teddy bears of this small size because it’s easier to cut and sew, especially when working with tiny details. Of course, if you want to add a personal touch, you can always experiment with embroidery or mixing fabrics.

As for working with kids, I’ve received a lot of positive feedback from readers who’ve tried making these bears with children. It can truly be a fantastic bonding activity where everyone gets to add their own creative touch. Thanks for the inspiration—this might be a great topic to explore in one of my upcoming posts! 😊
